***UPDATES***

July 22 - Yesterday was NBC day at the TCA Summer meeting.  Ian McShane participated in a panel about his upcoming NBC show "Kings," and delivered a bit of an Al-like rant (which you can read about here), but inevitably, talk turned to Deadwood, and McShane speculated again about the demise - listen to it below (audio only, 2:46).

July 11 - Writer/Director Jeremy Dylan Lanni of Noble Savage Productions announces that shooting has wrapped on its short film "A Woman in the West," a fifteen-minute fable about a frontier wife who is tough, independent, and willing to do whatever is necessary to protect her husband and her home.   The film stars "Deadwood" alumns Paula Malcomson, Larry Cedar, and Peter Jason.  Jeremy provided SaveDeadwood.net with some production stills and off-set photos.  Click any of the thumbnails below for a larger version of all, and more details on the film.

Jeremy's film "Under There" is in the running to be aired next Saturday night on WNET-13 in New York.  Click here to vote for "Under There."

July 10 - Well, the Google News Alerts from the TCA Summer Meeting started coming in hot and heavy tonight, and by now, everybody probably knows that Richard Plepler, one of HBO's co-Presidents, pretty much put the final nail in the coffin of hopes for the Deadwood movies, saying the chances were "slim to none."  For those of you who'd like the condensed version of this saga, here's how it goes:

May 11, 2006 - Word leaks that HBO has not renewed the contracts of the cast for a fourth season.

May 14, 2006 - SaveDeadwood.net goes online and begins an intensive effort to lobby the television press.

May 25, 2006 - Fans organized through SaveDeadwood.net place an ad in Daily Variety.

June 2, 2006 - Chris Albrecht, then-CEO of HBO, and David Milch meet in New York and reach a handshake deal to produce a pair of telepics to bring Deadwood to a conclusion.

May 5, 2007 - Chris Albrecht punches out his girlfriend in Las Vegas following the Floyd Mayweather - Oscar De La Hoya fight and is forced to resign a few days later, essentially nullifying his agreement with Milch regarding "Deadwood". The new honchos at HBO want no part of "Deadwood," and Milch subsequently loses interest in doing the films.

July 10, 2008 - Richard Plepler more or less sticks a fork in it at the TCA Summer meeting.

June 10 - Two bits of casting news, one a bit old, and one which totally escaped my notice until recently:

Tim Olyphant will join the cast for the second season of FX's "Damages", scheduled to premiere early next year.

Ian McShane will re-team with "Sexy Beast" co-star Ray Winstone in the Brit caper flick "44 Inch Chest," also starring Tim Roth.  The picture was written by Louis Mellis and David Scinto, who penned "Sexy Beast".  It's currently scheduled for a May, 2009 U.S. release, although it apparently doesn't have a U.S. distribution deal yet.

June 3 - Molly Parker's new series, "Swingtown," premieres on CBS Thursday, June 5th at 10:00pm ET/PT.

May 20 - NBC has placed a series order for "Kings" starring Ian McShane, which will debut on Sunday nights in January 2009.

May 10 - Earl Brown elaborates on his "Public Enemies" experience and on HBO's new series "1%"

May 6 - Paula Malcomson has been cast as the lead in the "Battlestar Galactica" prequel miniseries.  Congrats, Paula!

April 17 - In his April 17th podcast, Tim Goodman fields a question from a caller in London regarding the "Deadwood" movies.  Scroll down to end of the article and download the podcast (it's an mp3 file).  The question starts at the 20:12 mark.

April 11 - In an article recapping HBO's appointment of Sue Naegle as head of programming, Variety quotes the San Francisco Chronicle's Tim Goodman as saying HBO got hit "in the karma department" when they abandoned the "Deadwood" movies.

April 5 - A couple of casting notes:  Ian McShane will star in "Kings" which looks like a lock for NBC's fall schedule.

Earl Brown describes a less-than-pleasant experience on the big-everything "Public Enemies".  Fear not, he's been cast in an HBO pilot called "1%"

March 25 - Ian McShane discusses "The Homecoming" and "Deadwood" on Charlie Rose.  Comments about "Deadwood" start at about the 13 minute mark.  The entire interview is 20 minutes.

March 24 - The Charlie Rose interview with Ian McShane airs tonight on your local PBS station.

March 14 - L.A. area fans - Earl Brown and Sacred Cowboys return to the Knitting Factory in Hollywood on March 22.

March 14 - Ian McShane will be a guest on Charlie Rose on PBS tonight.  Check your local listings.  We'll try to have it up on the site sometime Saturday.  Note: the McShane interview was bumped from tonight's show.  It has been tentatively scheduled to air sometime next week.

February 21 - L.A. area fans - Earl Brown stars with Richard Schiff ("The West Wing") and Izabella Miko in Lisa Campbell-Demaine's "Waiting," which will be screened Friday, February 29th at 9:30pm, at the Fine Arts Theatre at 8556 Wilshire Blvd in Beverly Hills, as part of The Beverly Hills Shorts Festival.   Lisa served as First Assistant Director on "Deadwood" for two seasons; Izabella had a memorable role in "Deadwood" as "Carrie," who met her end at the hands of Garret Dillahunt's Wolcott in the second season.

February 18 - Savedeadwood.net attended the Feb 16th matinee performance of "The Homecoming" at the Cort Theater on 48th St. We are pleased to report that Ian McShane delivered the goods in the role of Max, the sot arguably at the centerpiece of this exercise in "what's this all about"?  And he had a visibly good time doing it.

For those not familiar with this work, we recommend the 1973 film version, with screenplay by the author, Harold Pinter, starring Paul Rogers as Max, Ian Holm as Lenny and Vivian Merchant as Ruth.

The film version, directed by Peter Hall, by virtue of its use of wide-angled close-ups, and the lack of a live audience, seemed a more dour and ominous take than the play currently mounted at the Cort under the direction of Daniel Sullivan.

With Pinter, you can take your pick, and this production is superb.  The set by Eugene Lee feels note-perfect in its bashed-out, worn-out furniture and record rack featuring Charlie Barnet.

We have taken note of reviews that took issue with the portrayal of Lenny by Raul Esparza; we simply found it to be more on the comedic side of the ledger.  Take your pick; in this version, he does it very well.

Eve Best is impenetrable as Ruth and puts the ambi in ambiguous.  Michael McKean as Sam in his reserve until the end is a pleasure to watch.  James Frain as Teddy cuckolds well.  Gareth Saxe as Joey unfortunately isn't given much to work with.

For any “Deadwood” fans who live within spittin’ distance of NY, we strongly recommend this production of “The Homecoming” at the Cort Theater, through mid-April .

February 5 - Interview with Ian McShane and Raul Esparza of "The Homecoming" recorded January 4, 2008 (27 mins).

January 18 - HBO and David Milch have announced details of his next project.

December 22 - Not to turn this into the Ian McShane page, but The Homecoming got great reviews

December 8 - Terrific interview with Ian McShane in tomorrow's New York Times.

November 29 - A funny quote from McShane in the last paragraph of this interview regarding his role in "The Homecoming."

November 24 - According to a person who worked on both Deadwood and JFC, Jim Beaver ran into David Milch recently and says that Milch is "really sick of people asking when the DW movies are going to happen."  Apparently, he expects people to be asking "How are things going on the new gritty cop drama?  Cause we can't wait for that..."

November 3 - In response to many inquiries - We will continue to maintain the Show Updates section, but only if there is significant news.  Milch and HBO have made it clear that "Deadwood" isn't on either of their to-do lists, which is a goddamn shame.

We will no longer be maintaining the Cast Updates section.  "Deadwood" served as a springboard for the cast to take on many new opportunities, and rightfully so; however, the sheer number of those opportunities now outweighs the amount of time we have to keep up with them.  We wish them all the best, and thank them for their outstanding performances on "Deadwood."  We'll personally continue to follow their work with delight.

While we thank HBO and Milch for presenting "Deadwood," we also must express extreme disappointment

for dropping the ball on what was essentially a commitment to the fans, and lying to us in the process.  That's showbiz.

Thanks again to the fans from all over the world who have visited and contributed and tried.  Next time, let's make sure we get the $7 in advance.  Or else, just cancel HBO, we don't miss it at all.

This page will most likely go offline in mid-January, 2008.   The transcripts site will likely remain online.

Anyways...

October 11 - HBO puts out some new bullshit here.  After approximately 20 years, SaveDeadwood.net cancelled its subscription to HBO yesterday.

October 2 - Chris Serico of The (White Plains, NY) Journal News has comments from Earl Brown and Jim Beaver.

October 1 -  Ryan Stewart at cinematical.com reports that in an interview yesterday, Ian McShane said "They're dismantling the ranch and taking the stuff out."

Melody Ranch would not confirm or deny this on the phone today.  Nevertheless, it appears that the end of the trail has arrived.

Here's HBO's side of the story, in a letter to a Deadwood and JFC fan.  Thanks for sharing the letter with us.

Thanks to all the loyal Deadwood fans who kept the pressure on for the past year and a half.  I'm confident we did all we could.  Grab that bottle of Basil Hayden...

A reminder to East Coast fans - Ian McShane opens on Broadway in "The Homecoming" on December 9th.

If there are any further developments (or post-mortems) we will post them here.

September 8 - Earl reports that he had lunch in the past week with several of his "Deadwood" castmates, but that they requested that he keep the details mum.

August 28 - Chris Serico of The (White Plains, NY) Journal News has an account from Earl Brown of an additional conversation Earl had with David Milch late last week.  It's time to drop Milch a note encouraging him to get back in the saddle.  See the June 6th entry below for the address of Milch's production company...

August 25 - Jim Beaver responds to a fan's letter to David Milch.

August 23 - Earl Brown has updated his thoughts on his MySpace blog.

August 21 - A clarification: From several accounts, it is clear that reviving "Deadwood" is currently nowhere near the top of David Milch's list of priorities.  We have been operating under a different assumption.

While I understand the sentiments of those fans who feel that Milch "owes" us the movies, personally, I just don't feel that way.  For the other point of view, click here (reproduced with permission).   I wouldn't want to see them done unless and until he is fully engaged.

In response to the many emails received over the past couple of days, we will continue to update the page when there are any significant developments, because we actually do feel an obligation to the fans; however, we will not be chasing any more mirages.  Thank you all for your support and readership over the past year-plus.

August 18 - The rollercoaster ride continues.  Variety has a piece on David Milch's thoughts post-"JFC".  Earl Brown had a conversation with Milch at his office on Thursday and came away not too optimistic.

August 15 - Adam Buckman of the New York Post reports that in a phone interview yesterday, David Milch said he's "still trying to figure out a way to produce the "Deadwood" TV movies..."

August 14 - The Hollywood Reporter says that HBO has canceled "John From Cincinnati," but is the the process of extending its development deal with David Milch which currently runs through August of 2008.  No mention of any developments on the "Deadwood" front.

August 10 - The fate of the "Deadwood" movies did not come up in last night's interview with David Milch on Tavis Smiley.

August 10 - Playbill reports that Ian McShane's engagement on Broadway in The Homecoming will run from November 23 through April 13.

August 7 - David Milch is scheduled to appear on PBS's Tavis Smiley on Thursday August 9th. Why not Tell Tavis to ask Milch if he'd still like to do the Deadwood movies...

July 22 - Let's follow-up on the TCA meeting and let HBO know we're not going away...

July 22 - Tom Jicha of the (South Florida) Sun-Sentinel - "Robin Weigert, who plays Calamity Jane in Deadwood and has a featured role in the new NBC drama Life, was told HBO is saying movies to bring closure to the Deadwood story are problematical because of anticipated difficulties reassembling the stars. If that's the only thing in the way, Weigert predicted Deadwood will be back. "I don't think there's anyone in the cast who won't jump at the chance to return." "

July 14 - We are waiting a couple of days to see if there is any additional fallout from the TCA meeting; then we have an idea for a little rearguard action.  Stay tuned...

July 12 - According to several accounts of the HBO session at the TCA meeting, HBO execs put the chances of the "Deadwood" movies at 50-50, citing David Milch's schedule.  Good job by the fans who contacted critics, and good job by the critics pressing the issue - HBO got an earful today:

Maureen Ryan, Chicago Tribune      Tim Goodman's The Bastard Machine-1-  -2-      David Kronke, L.A. Daily News

Peter Ames Carlin, The Oregonian      Ellen Gray, Philadelphia Daily News      Alan Sepinwall, The (Newark) Star Ledger

Maria Elena Fernandez, L.A. Times      Roger Catlin, Hartford Courant      Hal Boedecker, Orlando Sentinel

Korbi Ghosh, E! Online      Andrew Wallenstein and Nellie Andreeva, The Hollywood Reporter      Victor Balta, Comcast

John Lafayette, TVWeek      Tom O'Neil, L.A. Times      Melanie McFarland, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

July 8 - Here is a list of contact information for TCA members (we've removed the link; HBO presented on July 12th). Write to the member in your area and ask them to keep "Deadwood" in mind when HBO presents at the summer meeting.

July 7 - The Television Critics Association summer meeting takes place next week.  According to one source, HBO presents on Thursday the 12th.  Please come back Sunday afternoon, when we will have a list of TCA contact information.  It won't hurt to have it on the mind of your local critic...

June 30 - Shooting on "John From Cincinnati" wrapped yesterday.

June 29 - In a message on the HBO board today, Earl Brown said, "Regarding DEADWOOD: I'm told by ones in the know, that A) David is innocent of charges he sabotaged DW in favor of JOHN and B) The DW movies are not a dead issue (if they come to fruition, they will be a difficult and expensive issue)."

June 21 - One of our intrepid Deadwood fans recently received this response from HBO.

June 13 - In a message posted on the HBO Deadwood message board today, Jim ("Ellsworth") Beaver said this: "Every time I've talked to David or the other executive producers, they've told me, as recently as last week, that they are trying their damndest to get the movies made but don't know if or when it will happen...I don't know if the movies will get made, but I do know they're still paying rent on the wardrobe and set decoration."

It's now more important that ever that you contact HBO (see immediately below).  DO IT TODAY!

June 6 - Milch remained noncommittal in the interview with Craig Ferguson. Before you watch the interview here, please do some legwork by contacting HBO (see below) and some of the Deadwood-friendly media.

Points To Include:
HBO and David Milch have a deal with the fans.
It is time to follow through on that commitment and stop letting the fans twist in the wind.
We all know that there is a window this summer to get it done.

Bill Nelson was named Chairman and CEO of HBO yesterday.  Richard Plepler now has the top programming job.  They are both located in New York:

Home Box Office, Inc.

1100 Ave of the Americas
New York NY 10036

Let's not let Milch off the hook:
Red Board Productions
3000 W Olympic Blvd
Bldg 4
Santa Monica CA 90404

Now would also be a good time to again use this form to contact HBO and to call HBO's Consumer Affairs Department at 212-512-1208 (Monday through Friday 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Eastern Time).

June 5 - David Milch will be appearing on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson tonight.  Let's remind Craig of the interview he did with Milch last year, and ask him to ask David about Deadwood.

June 2 - Forbes.com quotes Dave Baldwin, HBO's executive vice president of program planning, as saying HBO will name a new CEO "imminently."  Stay tuned; when a replacement is named, we will want to remind the new CEO of HBO's commitment to the "Deadwood" movies.

May 16 - SaveDeadwood.net spoke today with the Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio, and they say they are anticipating production to begin on "Deadwood" when "John From Cincinnati" wraps.

May 10 - In an interview apparently conducted today with Newsweek, David Milch mentions the Deadwood telepics (page 2), but doesn't say anything he hasn't said before.

May 9 - Chris Albrecht has resigned as Chairman and CEO of HBO, following an apparent domestic violence incident in Las Vegas over the weekend.  It is unclear what effect this may have on production of the "Deadwood" telepics, but the timing does not seem to be favorable.  Stay tuned...

April 29 - A person involved in the production of "John From Cincinnati" says that the number of episodes in the first season of "JFC" will be curtailed if necessary to begin production of the "Deadwood" telepics.  According to this source, a producer was heard to say, "We've got to start ["Deadwood"] in June."

April 29 - In an interview on TV Guide.com, Powers Boothe says, " We're planning on doing two two-hour movies this summer. They're talking about [starting production in] June, but I'll tell you, honestly, as much as I hope it happens, I'll believe it when I see it. When a cast splits up, it's hard to bring them back together...If we don't do it in June, I don't think it'll ever be done, because, look, various people have pilots for other series. I have other commitments, and I know Ian [McShane] has other commitments. That [June] time slot is kind of it. But I think if any show ever deserved at least that much, it's Deadwood".

April 18 - Mo Ryan in The Chicago Tribune reports that a "Deadwood spokeswoman" says that things still appear to be on track for production of the "Deadwood" telepics this summer, although they "most likely" won't air until 2008.  Nothing really dramatically new here, but at least it's an update!

March 22 - The New York Times (free subscription may be required), in an article about HBO's future, says the fan outcry over the cancellation of "Deadwood" "had taught HBO some lessons about the need to wrap up big serialized dramas, out of obligation to those paying customers who had been devoted to the shows."

March 5 - A person involved in the production of Milch's "John From Cincinnati" reports that in addition to Austin Nichols in a starring role, "Deadwood" alums Jim Beaver, Dayton Callie, Garret Dillahunt and Stephen Tobolowksy all have recurring or guest starring roles.  From his account of the shooting schedule, it appears that things currently remain on track for "John" to wrap shooting towards mid-to-late June.

February 28 - Gord Lacey of tvshowsondvd.com says HBO will announce that the "Deadwood" Season 3 DVD release is set for June 12.

February 9 - Eric Goldman at ign.com interviews Powers Boothe concerning his roles on "24" and "Deadwood."

January 24 - Eric Goldman at ign.com seconded Alan Pergament's report concerning the current status of the movies, reporting that at the TCA meeting, David Milch said, "We have contracts, we have the set, we're doing the script."  It must be noted that in recent interviews or messages, a couple of the more well-known cast members have said that they are not yet under contract.

January 17 - Alan Pergament in The Buffalo News reported that Ian McShane has deferred his Broadway role for two months, and that "...actors have signed contracts and everything seems to be going as planned."

January 16 - a couple more articles from The TCA winter meeting indicating that Milch and HBO are aiming for summer production on the "Deadwood" telepics: Rob Owen in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Gail Pennington in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.  Given the accounts of Milch's session at this meeting, it's little wonder that the reporting coming out of this meeting regarding "Deadwood"  is all over the place.

On January 13, Zap2it.com reported that at the Television Critics Association winter meeting in Pasadena, Milch said he was working on the first "Deadwood" telepic script with Evan Wright.  Michael Ausiello of TV Guide said that, at the same meeting, Milch told him he has "every intention" of making the telepics.

On January 4, the cast of "Deadwood" was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award® for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.  The awards ceremony will be broadcast on TNT and TBS on Sunday, January 28.

On December 26, Gail Shister reported in The Philadelphia Inquirer that "...shooting is set to begin in June or July on two, two-hour HBO movies that will wrap up the series, according to Milch."

On December 20, W. Earl Brown indicated that he'd been told the "Deadwood" Season Three DVDs would be released in June, 2007.

On November 13, Variety reported that Ian McShane is set to star in a revival of "The Homecoming" on Broadway in Fall 2007.  Rehearsals pegged to begin in October.  While we don't know the rest of his schedule, this appears to leave a window for his participation in at least one of the telepics, if they proceed on the timetable Earl Brown mentioned as a possibility.

On November 2, Keone Young (Mr. Wu) reported that he had spoken to David Milch at Milch's appearance at the L.A. Central Library the previous night, and that Milch's last words to him were "You're going to like the new script."

On October 30, W. Earl Brown (Dan Dority) reported that he had had lunch with Milch the previous week, and that Milch was planning on shooting the first telepic when shooting on the first season of "John From Cincinnati" wraps, somewhere in a June/July 2007 timeframe.

On October 23, Variety reported that Milch said he had begun work on the script for the first telepic, and was hopeful of getting most, if not all, the series regulars back.

By the way, David Milch's book Deadwood: Stories of the Black Hills was released in October, and is a must-have for die-hard "Deadwood" fans.

Also released this summer was Reading Deadwood: A Western To Swear By, a collection of essays of a more academic nature, edited by David Lavery.

***HISTORY of SAVEDEADWOOD.NET.***

On May 11, 2006, word leaked that HBO had failed to renew cast contracts for a fourth season of "Deadwood."

With a June 11th deadline for contract renewal approaching, "Deadwood" fans sprang into action with suggestions on how to remedy the situation.  On May 14, www.SaveDeadwood.net was up and running with a distilled list of actions fans could easily take to make their voices heard.

One member of the "Deadwood" community suggested taking an ad in the trade paper Variety, and a fund was established to accomplish that goal.  Fund raising commenced on May 18, and within 5 days, sufficient funds were raised to place the ad, which ran in the New York and Hollywood editions of Daily Variety on May 25.

Simultaneously, through the efforts of the fan community, the website gained valuable publicity in national print and online media, including www.imdb.com, USA Today, The Chicago Tribune, and Rolling Stone, all of which added fuel to the fund raising effort and fan response campaign.

The New York Times has reported that during the weekend of June 2 - 4, David Milch and Chris Albrecht, chairman and CEO of HBO, met in New York to attempt a compromise.

On June 4, 2006, Variety reported that HBO and David Milch had reached a handshake deal to extend "Deadwood" past a third season by producing two two-hour film "episodes".  While this is not the full fourth season we had been hoping for, Milch has stated that he believes it will allow him to complete the story he envisioned in a satisfactory manner.

This was always the mission of SaveDeadwood.net

To the extent that "Deadwood" fans' efforts to save the show had an influence on the outcome, we can all be pleased that season three need not spell the end of this fantastic show.

Negotiations with the cast and crew must still be undertaken; we hope that these will resolve to a fair result for all concerned.   We will continue to monitor progress, and make no mistake, stand ready to mobilize again should it become necessary.

For those visiting SaveDeadwood.net for the first time, including those of you visiting from the Citizen Marketers website, the final version of the SaveDeadwood.net page prior to the June 4 announcement can be found here.

Cristi H. Brockway's transcripts of the show can be found at this site.
